Obtaining VIN and HIN Checks

How do I obtain a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check or a Hull Identification Number (HIN) check for my watercraft?

VIN/HIN checks are scheduled by calling the Sheriff Department at (765) 342-5544. When calling allow enough time in order that officers have time to get there, they may be on other calls, or may take more urgent calls first.

To save you and our officers time, go to, or check with the BMV as to what you will need, be aware that some things like home made trailers may require two or more inspections. Some may require that numbers be stamped into the frame.....  markers, or easily re-moved ID plates will "Not" pass inspection. We have been asked to inspect / pass a flash light strapped to motorcycle handle bars, bicycle horn on a vehicle, or to leave blanked signed affidavits, etc. For your own safety, "Please" do not ask officers to sign or pass something either illegal or unsafe!

Have in your possession the proper paperwork (title, registration, bill of sale, etc,) for the vehicle or watercraft to be checked, including the blank affidavit issued by the License Branch for the officer to complete.
