Juvenile/Adult Crime Stats Sheet - Year 2000 to Year 1999 Comparison

During calendar year 2000, 327 juvenile delinquency cases were presented to the Morgan Superior Court No. 2 for disposition [a decrease from 431 cases in 1999]. Of these 327 cases, 246 cases were resolved through formal juvenile court proceedings and disposition, and 81 cases were resolved by informal adjustment through the Morgan County Probation Department.

In comparing adult criminal cases filed in all of the Morgan Circuit and Superior Courts in 2000 with the juvenile delinquency cases formally filed with Superior Court No. 2 in 2000, the following information is noteworthy:


Secure Juvenile Detention Costs

The per diem costs to Morgan County of placing juvenile delinquent offenders in secure detention facilities increased slightly in 2000, as compared to 1999. According to the weekly detention statistics maintained by the Morgan Superior Court No. 2, the total costs of secure detention of juvenile delinquent offenders in year 2000 was approximately $144,340.47 (average cost: $2775.78 per week). By comparison, the total costs of secure detention of juvenile delinquent offenders in year 1999 was approximately $142,219.60 (average cost: $2734.99 per week).

Juvenile Probation Supervision Statistics

As of January 1, 2000, 130 juvenile delinquency cases were under supervision by the Juvenile Probation officers of Morgan County. During 2000, 206 new probation cases were referred to probation supervision. Of that total, 132 Delinquents and Status offenders were placed under formal probation supervision, and 74 Delinquents and Status offenders were placed under informal probation adjustment and supervision. Also during 2000, 207 probation cases were completed and closed. 79% of juveniles completed probation successfully; 11% of the juveniles had their probation modified or revoked because of violations. As of December 31, 2000, 129 juvenile delinquency cases were open and under supervision by the Juvenile Probation officers.

Adult Probation Statistics:

By comparison: as of 1/1/2000, 453 adult felony probation and 447 adult misdemeanor probation cases were under supervision of the Morgan County Probation Department.

During 2000, 356 new adult felony offenders and 618 new adult misdemeanor offenders were placed under supervision of the Morgan County Probation Department.

Waiver of Jurisdiction in Juvenile Delinquency Cases to Adult Court

In 2000, 5 juvenile delinquency cases filed with the Morgan Superior Court No. 2 were waived to adult criminal court for disposition (a  decrease from 7 cases waived in 1999) under the waiver of jurisdiction provisions of the Indiana Juvenile Code.

In many instances, a male or female juvenile offender committed to the I.D.O.C., was committed under several pending cases.  In actuality, eleven (11) juvenile males were committed to the I.D.O.C. in 2000 [increase from 9 in year 1999], and seven (7) juvenile females were committed to the I.D.O.C. in 2000 [increase from 3 in year 1999].
