Juvenile/Adult Crime Stats Sheet - Year 2008 to Year 2007 Comparison

During calendar year 2008, 288 juvenile delinquency cases were presented to the Morgan Superior Court No. 2 for disposition [a decrease  from 303 cases in 2007]. Of these 288 cases, 228 cases were resolved through formal juvenile court proceedings and disposition, and 60 cases were resolved by informal adjustment through the Morgan County Probation Department.

In comparing adult criminal cases filed in all of the Morgan Circuit and Superior Courts in 2008 with the juvenile delinquency cases  filed with Superior Court No. 2 in 2008, the following information is noteworthy:


Secure Juvenile Detention Costs

The per diem costs to Morgan County of placing juvenile delinquent offenders in secure detention facilities increased in 2008, as compared to 2007.  According to the weekly detention statistics maintained by the Morgan Superior Court No. 2, the total costs of secure detention of juvenile delinquent offenders in year 2008 was approximately $161,900.00 (average cost: $3113.00 per week).  By comparison, the total costs of secure detention of juvenile delinquent offenders in year 2007 was approximately $147,340.00  (average cost: $2833.00 per week).

Waiver of Jurisdiction in Juvenile Delinquency Cases to Adult Court

In 2008, 5 juvenile delinquency cases filed with the Morgan Superior Court No. 2 were waived to adult criminal court for disposition (an increase  from -0- cases waived in 2007) under the waiver of jurisdiction provisions of the Indiana Juvenile Code.

In many instances, a male or female juvenile offender committed to the I.D.O.C., was committed under several pending cases.  In actuality, eighteen (18) juvenile males were committed to the I.D.O.C. in 2008 [ increase from 7 in year 2007 ], and six (6)  juvenile females were committed to the I.D.O.C. in 2008 [ increase from 2 in year 2007 ].
